Education

Through free classes available to everyone, club volunteers teach students of all ages to appreciate and enjoy chess.

We are grateful to Grandmaster and four-time Women’s World Champion Susan Polgar of New York for donating her seven-volume “Winning Chess The Easy Way’’ DVD series and three of her books to use in our classes. Polgar’s DVDs and books are part of the teaching materials we use to help our members learn the basic principles of chess and embark on a lifetime of enjoyment. We encourage all members to learn more Polgar’s wide-ranging work in teaching and promoting chess by visiting her Web sites www.SusanPolgar.com,
 www.SusanPolgarFoundation.org and www.SusanPolgar.blogspot.com.

As Polgar and many others have shown, students who learn the basic principles of chess do better in school and in solving everyday problems. At the other end of life, other studies indicate games that emphasize reasoning skills like chess, bridge and crossword puzzles help protect our minds.

We have had students as young as 6. We also have octogenarians in our classes. Even if you are a rank beginner, you will comfortably fit into one of our programs. You do not have to attend every week to benefit from the classes. The concepts keep reoccurring and your knowledge expands from repetition and understanding, not memorization.

An added benefit for attending our classes is that students are awarded one free club tournament entry coupon in recognition of every three IRCCC classes they attend.

Vero Beach program

The classroom sessions are held Wednesdays at 1:30 pm. They are geared to helping intermediate players as well as beginners who already know how to move the pieces. Most of these students are adults.

Mentors are available to help new players outside the classroom. Most students grasp the basics quickly and move on to the classroom program. You do not need any previous knowledge
of chess before we start teaching you. For more information about getting started or to reinforce what your learning go to the beginners page or use this link http://ircchessclub.org/beginnerspage.aspx
